I’ve been in a very reflective mood the past few days, and I apologise in advance if I’ve become a little typeractive in the process.
Something that has been on my mind lately is the memory of my uncle – who tragically passed just a few days before Christmas last year. The funeral was held on Christmas eve, and it was an extremely difficult time for my family, and especially his two young boys and my aunt.
I was asked by my aunt to choose a song which could be played at the funeral. I pondered over this for a couple of days, before deciding on a Stevie Wonder track I thought to be fitting, entitled “Sweetest Somebody I Know”, one of my all-time favourite songs, and also artists (and even more so now). If you haven’t heard this song, I would strongly urge you to check it out.
Not long after the funeral, my aunt asked me if I would be comfortable in taking ownership of one nearly brand new pair of my uncle’s shoes – something which I felt honoured to do. I wore them for the first time last week – while taking my golden retriever Jazz for a mid-afternoon walk in the winter sun.
For whatever reason, it seemed appropriate to strap my iPod up and listen to Sweetest Somebody. And I have to say, it was a totally indescribable and surreal feeling – I must have played it maybe 4 or 5 times on repeat. It was not only a reminder of this special person in my life, but also of how truly powerful music really can be.
Feeling inspired, I began to tap lyrics into my phone as I walked. By the time I got home, I had a complete song sitting in the drafts folder of my Nokia. Picking up my Tele, I found my way to the most amazing chord – one that sums it all up in just four notes.
I really feel lucky to have the opportunity to create an undying musical memory of my uncle. At the same time, this song is also a way of expressing my deepest respect and gratitude to a great man – whose life and music have given me the strength to push through the hard times, and the inspiration to believe in and follow my dreams.
Here is my tribute to two beautiful people…
